Tuesday, 11 February 2014: Woolworths Insurance data released today shows almost half (47%) of travellers surveyed have experienced trouble while on holidays, and yet many of us are still planning to enjoy time away this year without having travel insurance.
Woolworths Insurance data shows one in four (27%) travellers admit to having gone overseas without insurance. Generation Y is the most likely to travel without insurance (51%), closely followed by 45 per cent of males surveyed who admit to not having taking out travel insurance.
The reasons stated for not having insurance shows, 35 per cent claimed they were only going for a short trip, 27 per cent did not believe they were visiting a dangerous location and 21 per cent didn’t think anything would happen to them while away.
Chris Cramond, Head of Woolworths Insurance said; “Without travel insurance unexpected expenses can be very costly and could affect other plans you had for your holiday. Our research shows some of the most popular destinations for Australians to visit are Bali, New Zealand and Thailand. Even though they are close to home, and you may only be visiting for a short time, you still need to be covered because the most common holiday hazards can cost more than you think.”
“Twenty-seven per cent of respondents have missed, or had a flight cancelled resulting in an unplanned overnight stay and a further 29 per cent reported having their belongings lost or stolen. Not being covered for these events can ruin your holiday.
“The top five unexpected holiday expenses and approximate costs include
1. Emergency medical - $941
2. Loss of personal belongings - $570
3. Damage to personal belongings - $452
4. Accidents - $978
5. Theft - $813
“To make it easier for travellers to be covered for emergencies, Woolworths Insurance has introduced the Woolworths Travel Insurance Discount Card available in all Woolworths supermarkets. For just $1, this card gives you a 10% discount when you purchase your Travel Insurance online or over the phone – you’ll also get your $1 back off the premium amount.
“Woolworths Insurance encourages all travellers to research their insurance options to ensure they have appropriate cover for when and where they’re travelling.”
