30 January 2014: Woolworths Limited CEO, Grant O’Brien is pleased to announce that Matt Tyson has been appointed Managing Director of the Home Improvement division, including Masters and Home Timber and Hardware.
Mr Tyson replaces Don Stallings who returned to the United States in July last year.
Mr Tyson has an extensive Home Improvement background in retail operations and logistics, and has international experience across the United Kingdom, European and Asian markets.
He has had a long career with UK Home Improvement retailer Kingfisher plc, Europe’s largest Home Improvement retailer. Mr Tyson served with B&Q for more than 20 years, and was Chief Executive Officer in Asia from 2008 to 2010. Most recently, he was Chief Executive Officer of Castorama in Russia from 2010 to 2011.
Mr O’Brien said; “Matt has already had an extensive career across all facets of Home Improvement retailing. He brings this to Woolworths, along with his experience of leading young businesses through their infancy into phases of expansion, growth and profitability.
“We have been looking for the right person with this experience to replace Don, and I am confident we have found it in Matt.”
Home Timber and Hardware General Manager, Mark Burrowes, will leave the business in the coming months. James Aylen, who is currently the General Manager of Buying and Merchandising at Home Timber and Hardware, will become General Manager of Home Timber and Hardware from February, enabling a smooth transition.
Mr O’Brien thanked Mr Burrowes for his leadership of the business during a period of significant change and growth.
Melinda Smith, Director of Masters, and James Aylen will report to Matt Tyson. Mr Tyson will commence his role in mid-February.
