In 2018, we embarked on a journey to help create safe, engaging and interactive learning environments for young people with disabilities. We imagined a simulated supermarket space, built just for them, and the possibilities it could unlock.
The Mini Woolies program now operates in every state and territory across Australia, from Darwin to Deloraine, and has also expanded into New Zealand.
There are Mini Woolies in primary schools, high schools, TAFEs and a number of post school disability employment service providers, engaging over 8,100 young people with a disability in their learning experiences. As a result of the program, some students have undertaken work experience at Woolworths Supermarkets, and others have secured jobs in our stores.
General Manager of Enterprise Operations and Mini Woolies at Woolworths Group, Sarah Corey, said: "It's incredible to see how far Mini Woolies has come since its launch in 2018. Reaching 100 sites is a testament to all of the wonderful communities that have welcomed us across Australia and New Zealand.
"Whether it's for a maths class, cooking class or for practical experience in a retail qualification, we've seen the program used in so many creative ways, and it's fantastic to see students and staff having fun and making the most of these spaces.”
Going from strength to strength in her studies, Brittany had the opportunity to complete a two-week work placement at Woolworths Kirrawee and, after graduating, Brittany landed a job at the store.
“From the moment Brittany joined us, her bright and eager attitude has been truly infectious. She’s an absolute joy to have on the team, always bringing a positive energy and a genuine willingness to help with any task. She is a pleasure to work with, and she has blended into the team seamlessly,” said Kerry-Ann Campbell, Kirrawee’s Grocery Team Manager.
Of her experience, Brittany said, “I’m blown away by the fantastic support I receive from the staff here, even if I made a mistake, it was okay, they helped me to get it right so I knew I was going to do well here. The Mini Woolies site at TAFE set me up for success. I’m part of the team now!”
